They are thread stands ,if you are like me then chances are you use a lot of threads in one color ,
Then it makes a lot of more sense to get these big ones ,than it does buying a bunch of these little ones,these puppies are a little too big ,though fo the machine thread stands. and having it free standing like this ,well it is only a matter of time before it inevitably falls over.
Enter the thread stand,it has a nice heavy cast iron base for the stability and the hook at the top here is there so that the thread unwinds in a nice even consistent manner.Which in turn ,is crucial for a nice ,consistent stitch.
It is the same reason why our sergers have this four spool thread stand mechanism going on.
